The little Things Matter
Conversations with the Cockpit Legends Part 10
“The Little Things Matter”
It’s easy to overlook small steps, but in aviation, details save lives.“Checklists aren’t bureaucracy they’re lifelines,” he said. “Every bolt, switch, and procedure exists for a reason. Ignore the small things, and the big things fail.”I also remember my instructor in Malawi the Warm heart of Africa used to tell us , "Any little silly mistake you will die," this stayed with me.
He recounted a flight where a minor pre-flight step prevented a potential catastrophe. “No one notices the checklist if nothing goes wrong but every pilot knows the value of diligence.”This lesson applies far beyond aviation. Success in life, relationships, and careers comes from consistent attention to detail, discipline, and respect for process.
He also emphasized that small habits, when repeated consistently, build a foundation for excellence. “The pilot who trims the instruments correctly, double checks the fuel, and reviews the weather every time is the one who survives storms with calm confidence. In life, the little habits ,kindness, honesty, punctuality carry the same weight.”
Finally, he reminded me that attention to detail fosters trust. “When your crew, your passengers, or your team sees that you never overlook the small things, they trust you fully. That trust is as critical as any instrument in the cockpit.”
