Women in Aviation:Breaking Barriers
Conversations with the Cockpit Legends Part 11
“Women in Aviation: Breaking Barriers”
He smiled warmly when we spoke about young women in aviation. “Aviation doesn’t care about gender it rewards preparation, skill, and heart,” he said.I recalled I once attended a career affair hosted by an airline in Kenya called Jambo Jet and the speaking pilot said ,"A Pilot is not male or female ,Pilot is a profession,"this reasoned with me .
He shared stories of women pilots he had worked with who defied stereotypes, exceeded expectations, and inspired others. “Courage and resilience are the wings of progress,” he added.
As a young woman following my dream, his words felt empowering. Aviation offers opportunities to those willing to learn, work hard, and respect the skies regardless of gender.“Lead by example, mentor, and inspire,” he said. “That’s how you open doors for the next generation.”
He emphasized that breaking barriers isn’t always easy. “Many face skepticism, outdated expectations, or even discouragement,” he said. “But determination, preparation, and persistence will always outshine doubt.”
He also spoke about the importance of community. “Women supporting women in aviation strengthens everyone. Share knowledge, celebrate wins, and lift others when they struggle. The sky is big enough for all of us.”
For me, it was a reminder that leadership isn’t about a title it’s about impact. “When you succeed, take someone with you. Open doors, teach, and encourage. That’s how you multiply progress.”
Finally, he connected this lesson to legacy. “Breaking barriers is temporary if no one follows. True change happens when mentorship and guidance create a chain of empowered leaders.”If you are a young woman or aspiring pilot looking for mentorship, guidance, or a supportive aviation community, I invite you to email me at flygirljaneblogs@gmail.com. I will gladly connect you to my mentorship groups where we learn, grow, and uplift one another.
Stay tuned for Part 12, “Legacy in the Skies,” where we conclude the series with the ultimate lessons about purpose, impact, and life beyond the cockpit.
